Imaginary Friend
I am going to tell you all a story.
Once upon a time there was a little girl,
Who stood out from the crowd.
When you’re five this is not a good thing.
But this little girl found solace,
In her imaginary friend.
He was the greatest person in all the world,
With blue eyes and brown hair.
In her nightly dreams together they took on the world,
Slaying dragons and ruling magical kingdoms.
He used to comfort her,
When the world collapsed in around her,
And was always there when needed most.
As she grew, so did he.
He was older then the girl,
But in your dreams that didn’t matter-
When your five you don’t hang out with the “big kids”.
Together they would conquer the world!
It didn’t matter that he wasn’t real.
His eyes in her head,
Were enough to believe.
Then one day,
After years of dreaming and pretend,
A name was put to the face.
You could imagine,
This little girl’s surprise,
At the now age of eleven,
To discover,
Her blue eyed imaginary dream friend,
Was in fact real.
There he stood,
A few meters away.
Surprise shook her tiny body,
And then love filled her,
Hot and embarrassing.
In that moment
Determination was born-
To be loved in return,
To be noticed, to be seen,
To do something of worth.
In that moment
All childhood innocence was lost,
And she became a young woman.
The dreams changed and eventually faded away.
Plans lay on torn pages under her bed,
And her blue eyed friend
Faded ever further away from her imagination.
What was once so real and comforting
Became a torment
And a broken heart.
This is a true story.
